NECC Part of U.S. Figure Skating’s
Eastern Sectional Synchronized Skating Challenge Series
Lexington, MA, – August 26, 2010 – The Hayden Synchronized Skating Teams today announced the date for the Second Annual New England Challenge Cup synchronized skating competition. The NECC will be held February 26, 2011 at Boston University’s Walter Brown Arena. U.S. Figure Skating has sanctioned the event and the NECC will participate in USFS’ Eastern Sectional Synchronized Skating Challenge Series. Participation in the USFS Series portion of the NECC is open to all Beginner 1, 2, or 3, teams and preliminary, pre-juvenile, open juvenile, open collegiate or open adult teams. In addition to these skating levels the NECC will host competitive events in juvenile and intermediate.
A focus of the NECC is the collegiate competition where collegiate teams from across the region compete for the New England Challenge Cup, a trophy awarded to the winning collegiate team. Last year’s winning team, the University of New Hampshire, is expected to return and defend their title.
“The success of last year’s event and the enthusiasm for both a focused collegiate event and a Boston-based synchro event has really propelled interest in the NECC competition,” said Competition Chair Gail Hanson-Mayer. “Linking non-qualifying level teams with collegiate teams helps promote and grow this great sport for the young figure skaters as well as college students who want a team experience. The NECC and the USFS’ Challenge Series do that at two levels, which are critically important; the grass roots or beginner levels and at the collegiate level where there has been significant growth in synchronized team skating,” noted Hanson-Mayer.”
A special treat for the young skaters and public in general will be the appearance of the 2010 World Bronze Medalists the Haydenettes. The 18-time U.S. Champions will make a special appearance to exhibit their programs for the audience.
